Finnish President Alexander Stubb called for the abolishment of vetoes in the Security Council in his speech to the Summit of the Future Monday 23 September.
Stubb also called for the addition of five new permanent members to the Council. Furthermore, the Finnish President proposed to introduce the possibility to expel from the Council any country waging an illegal war of aggression.
Støre: War of aggression must end
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre called for the Security Council to come together and put an end to the war of aggression that Russia is waging against Ukraine in is speech at the Summit of the Future.
“We need a more transparent, inclusive and effective Security Council with greater limitations on the use of the veto,” Støre said.
Together with Mexico, Nepal, and Zambia, Norway will help raise funds and resources at a sustainability conference in Seville next year. Through its role as co-host, Norway will help secure sufficient funds and resources to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, Prime Minister Støre said in his speech.
Frederiksen: Ukraine must win
Mette Frederiksen, Prime Minister of Denmark, also emphasized the importance of Ukraine in her speech to the Summit of the Future.
“For me the fight of the brave people of Ukraine illustrates what is at stake,” Frederiksen said. “Democracy. Self-determination. Sovereignty. Freedom. It’s a matter of fundamental rights. Of not allowing one country to use aggression to change borders. Fueled by imperial dreams. Needless to say. The war must end. Now. And Ukraine must win.”
Bjarni Benediksson, Prime Minister of Iceland and Ebba Busch Deputy-Prime Minister of Sweden addressed the Summit on Sunday.
