What is the crisis about?

On 15 April 15, 2023, the fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The armed conflict is affecting millions of lives in Sudan and causing mass displacement, food insecurity and education challenges that require immediate humanitarian help.

Right now, Sudan is experiencing a humanitarian catastrophe with over 25 million people in desperate need of assistance.

UN aid agencies on Friday welcomed the news that the Sudanese authorities will open Adre border crossing from Chad into Sudan, as the war-torn country faces famine or acute hunger in many regions, with many roads impassable owing to heavy rains. (UN News)

The humanitarian situation in Sudan remains an absolute catastrophe. 

A staggering 26 million people are in acute hunger. That’s the equivalent of New York City times three – full of starving families and malnourished children. 

More than 10 million people have been forced to flee their homes due to violence, hunger and deprivation. 

OCHA appeals to Security Council for urgent action to fight famine.

  • Two senior UN officials appealed to the Security Council on Tuesday for more resources and greater humanitarian access in Sudan, where people are literally dying of hunger as the war between rival militaries rages on. (UN News)
  • Days after the Famine Review Committee concluded that famine conditions are present in Zamzam camp, close to El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, a top humanitarian official told the Security Council that “this is an entirely man-made crisis – and a shameful stain on our collective conscience.” (UNIFEED)

5 August
