The Summit of the Future

Over one hundred and thirty world leaders are expected to speak at the two day Summit of the Future 22-23  September.

Alexander Stubb the President of Finland is, traditionally, the only Nordic Head of State on the speakers´list. It is the first time that Stubb participates in a UN Summit since his election to the presidency in March this year.

Prime Ministers Mette Fredriksen (Denmark), Jonas Gahr Støre (Norway) and Bjarni Benediktsson (Iceland) speak on behalf of their respective countrie. Sweden is represented by Ebba Busch, the Deputy Prime Minister – see tentative schedule below.

Security Council Members: Foreign Ministers

Many countries, including China, France, UK and USA are represented by their Foreign Ministers, and Russia by a Deputy Foreign Minister.

Nevertheless, the Summit will be attended by many heads of state and governments, including leaders of Italy and Ireland, India and Turkey and the President of the European Council.

Heads of UN institutions are on the speakers list as well as many regional or international organisations such as the African Union and the Council of Europe; the International Olympic Committee and Interpol.

The Summit of the Future 22-23 September is preceded by Action Days, where NGOs, Academia and Civil Society engage on the themes of the Summit.

The Summit starts at 3pm (Stockholm time, 4 pm Helsinki), with the Adoption of the outcome document entitled “A Pact for the Future”, agreed in advance by consensus through intergovernmental negotiations, to which the Global Digital Compact and Declaration will be added.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres told a Press Conference on Wednesday that that the Summit “cannot fail” and that there was “potential breakthroughs on a number of important fronts,” in the negotiatons on the outcome document.

The debate starts at 4pm after the adoption.

Here is a tentative schedule for the Summit and following is the schedule for the Nordic leaders. Each speaker is allocated five minutes in the podium.

Sunday 22 September

  • Bjarni Benediktsson Prime Minister of Iceland – 33d speaker in the first session Sunday 22 September that starts at 4 pm (Stockholm time, 2pm Reykjavík time)
  • Ebba Busch Deputy-Prime Minister of Sweden – 42nd speaker in the first session Sunday 22 September in the session that starts at 4 pm.

Monday 23 September

  • Alexander Stubb President of Finland – 8th speaker on Monday 23 September in the session that starts at 4 pm. (Helsinki time)
  • Mette Fredriksen Prime Minister of Denmark -18th speaker Monday 23 September in the session that starts at 3 pm.
  • Jonas Gahr Støre Prime Minister of Norway -30th speaker on Monday 23 September in the session that starts at 3 pm.
