Nordic countries make pledges worth $73 million at Yemen Conference

31 pledges amounting to $1.16 billion were made at a High-level meeting for Yemen co-organized by the UN, Sweden and Switzerland, yesterday, in Geneva.

The highest pledges were made by the USA $444 million, the EU Commission $205 million, Germany $129 million and the UK 107 million. In total the five Nordic countries pledged almost $73 million. Sweden leading with $26 million, followed by Norway $25 million, Denmark $18 million, Finland $4.2 million and Iceland $875,000

“Last year, we saw progress in the path for peace. This improved the daily lives of Yemenis and helped humanitarian access. Peace is our principal hope for 2023,” said Martin Griffiths, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs in a Tweet.

However, the amount is quite lower than the target of raising $4.3 billion to provide support and protection for 17.3 million people in war-torn Yemen, which remains among the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
