On 24 June, the European Council adopted its conclusions on the priorities of the European Union (EU) to be presented at this year’s United Nations General Assembly. As in previous years, the EU is committed to promoting multilateral solutions rooted in the UN Charter and supporting the UN Secretary-General’s efforts to foster global peace. The EU emphasized the importance of international cooperation to address pressing global challenges.
Tackling the Global Crisis of Climate, Biodiversity, and Pollution
Amid the escalating global crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, which threaten the planet and compound security concerns, the EU is dedicated to partnering with other nations to drive a fair and inclusive global ecological transition.
2030 Agenda and the Summit of the Future
A key focus for the EU is the acceleration of efforts to achieve the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The EU also views the upcoming Summit of the Future as a pivotal event for reinforcing the multilateral system.
The EU will continue championing human rights in the coming years, urging all nations to cooperate with the UN’s human rights system.
Key Priorities for EU Action at the UN
- Reinforcing commitment to a rules-based international order
- Supporting global peace and security
- Promoting sustainable development and securing development financing
- Addressing the interconnected crises of climate, biodiversity, and pollution
- Building trust through a more effective multilateral system
Additionally, the EU will push for the inclusion of a diverse and independent civil society in multilateral processes, from human rights forums to peace mediation and decision-making platforms.
